Schmausbuch Nummer 2 -The Stories Part 1

The first Schmausbuch, published in 2002 and sold out long ago, has been not just a recipe book, it also was the sample book of the studio‘s stock of metal type at the time.

“Fernöstliches Schmausbuch”, 2002 – sold out

Schmausbuch Nummer 2 follows along this line and for its 52 pages metal and wood type was used that has arrived at the studio after 2002. The book is built on a basis of folios. After being folded a folio will yield four book pages. Each folio is dedicated to one recipe. And for every folio a special choice of fonts has been used to create a unique typography. In most cases one Antiqua-style font has teamed up with either its own italic version or one or more scriptlike fonts. And of course some ornaments join in as well.

Trajanus 1939, Warren Chapell; Vendôme: 1962, Francois Ganeau; Reiner Black: 1953, Imre Reiner

The American Warren Chapell was a student of renowned Rudolf Koch in the early 1930s training as a typedesigner and stampcutter. He created Trajanus in 1939 and my batch of metal type Trajanus arrived at the studio in an extremely old and battered type cabinet accompanied by some more modern ones that altogether had to make space for a giant new printing press at their former home. There Trajauns must have been the bread-and-butter font. It pretty obviously had been very much used.
